Frequently Asked Questions –
Mental Health First Aid Kit™
GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is the Mental Health First Aid Kit™?
The Mental Health First Aid Kit™ is a therapist-designed mental health first aid resource that supports stress reduction, emotional regulation, and everyday mental wellness. It provides tangible tools people can use in real time at home, at work, and in the moments between appointments. Unlike a mindfulness app, this is a hands-on stress reduction kit built for real life.
Who is the kit for?
The kit is designed for individuals and workplaces. It supports preventative workplace measures, Employee Assistance Program (EAP/EFAP) awareness, employee self service initiatives, and everyday mental wellness activities.
Is this only for people with mental health diagnoses?
No. Just as with physical health, mental health is 24/7 and exists on a spectrum. The kit is trauma-informed and supports stress reduction strategies, burnout prevention, emotional overwhelm, self- empowerment and life transitions. It aligns well with Mental Health Awareness Month and Mental Wellness Month initiatives but is designed for year-round use.
How does the Mental Health First Aid Kit™ support Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace?
Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace is about creating an environment where people feel supported, respected, and equipped to manage work-related stress before it turns into harm.
The Mental Health First Aid Kit™ supports this by providing practical, therapist-designed tools employees can use to regulate stress, manage emotional strain, and take early action when challenges arise. Rather than relying solely on policy, training, or crisis response, the kit focuses on prevention and day-to-day coping — where psychological risk is most effectively reduced.
By giving every employee access to the same tangible resource, organizations help normalize mental health conversations, reduce stigma, and reinforce a culture of care and shared responsibility. The kit complements existing psychological health and safety frameworks, workplace mental health policies, and Employee Assistance Programs by addressing the gap between awareness and real-time action.
THERAPY, CLINICAL CARE, AND SAFETY
Does this replace therapy?
No. The kit does not replace therapy, a mental health hotline, or a mental health crisis line. It is designed to support early intervention and self-regulation before stress escalates.
How does this align with the Mental Health Act?
The Mental Health First Aid Kit™ is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat conditions under the Mental Health Act or the Mental Health Act Ontario. It supports psychological health, safety, and wellbeing through prevention, self-efficacy and education.
Is this evidence-informed?
Yes. The kit draws from therapeutic communication, therapeutic recreation, mindfulness based stress reduction, stress reduction theory, and practical stress reduction services used in real-world counselling and workplace settings.
WHAT’S IN THE KIT?
What exactly is included?
The kit includes more than 10 tangible tools designed to support stress reduction activities, grounding, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and practical coping. Most components are proprietary and not listed in full detail.
Can I buy items individually?
Yes. Many components are available individually so people can build their own stress reduction kit over time.
Why tangible tools? Why not just use an app?
Mindfulness apps can be helpful, but when stress hits, people often need something physical and immediate. Tangible tools support stress reduction at work and at home without requiring screens, technology or having to find a phone number.
